Background
Dover Castle is one of English Heritage’s most popular properties. It has an amazing history stretching through key events including a siege in 1216 and the planning of the Normandy landings, which were masterminded from the castle’s secret underground tunnels. On top of that it just happens to be one of the most haunted places in Britain!
Objectives
English Heritage wanted to draw on the history and architecture of the property to add rich media to the Dover Castle section of their extensive web site. The main objective was to give young potential visitors an insight into the experiences available at the castle and to increase the number of family visits.
Solution
We produced a completely bespoke Flash platform game representing the architectural features of Dover Castle. In each of the three levels, players encounter ghosts that are said to haunt the tunnels and towers of the castle. A fancy dress box allows players to dress up in a sheet to ‘spook the spooks’ and a leaderboard records high scores. Information points around the game give players snippets of information about the castle which will also help them to complete the game.
Results
The game proved to be very popular and resulted in the majority of players referring at least one friend. There was also an increase of over 50% in the amount of visitor time spent on this section of the site.
